Moving to Poland from the UK: separate entry, work and residence before you travel

The short answer for British citizens

For a short visit, a British passport may allow visa-free Schengen travel within the applicable limit, but visitor permission is not a general right to move to Poland or start work. A longer move normally requires the route that matches the real purpose: employment, study, family, business or another recognised basis.

People protected by the EU–UK Withdrawal Agreement can have a different position from someone moving after the transition period. Do not copy another British person's checklist without confirming which group applies to you.

Check the work route before accepting a start date

A job offer does not by itself authorise work or create lawful stay. Confirm which party must obtain any work authorisation, what the proposed contract says and which entry or residence document you will use.

Compare the employer, role, location, hours and pay across the offer, contract and any work-authorisation document. Use independently obtained contact details and the official Polish business registers when verifying a company.

• Keep work, entry and residence evidence as separate records

Choose the correct visa or residence sequence

Some routes require preparation before travel; others include steps after arrival. Use the Polish consular and Office for Foreigners information for the purpose that matches your circumstances. Do not assume that visa-free entry can be converted into every long-term route from inside Poland.

Residence applications, authority appointments and document requirements can change. Use the current MOS process and the competent voivodeship office rather than relying on an old checklist or an intermediary's promise.

Plan healthcare, PESEL, address and tax as separate actions

Healthcare depends on the insurance basis—for example employment, voluntary insurance or another entitlement—not simply on nationality or having a PESEL number. Ask when any employer registration becomes effective and how dependants will be covered.

PESEL is an administrative identifier, not proof of entry, residence or work rights. Address registration is a separate municipal procedure, although the two processes can connect in some circumstances. Tax residence depends on the facts of where you live and maintain personal or economic ties.

Prepare a separate route for every family member

A partner or child may have a different entry document, residence basis, insurance position and deadline. Carrying the same surname or travelling together does not make the routes identical.

Before departure, check passports, birth or marriage records where relevant, parental-consent or custody documents, healthcare and any translation, apostille or legalisation requirement with the authority that will receive the document.

Treat return travel as its own legal check

Lawful stay inside Poland while an application is pending does not automatically provide permission to cross a border and return. Before leaving Poland, identify the valid residence card, visa or separate visa-free entitlement that would support re-entry on the intended date.

Always check the current border and travel position immediately before travel. A passport stamp confirming a pending residence application is not a substitute for a visa or residence card for Schengen travel.
