Moving to Poland from the USA: separate visiting, residence and work
A US passport may support short visa-free travel, but it does not by itself provide a long-term residence basis or permission to work. Plan entry, lawful stay and work authorisation as separate checks, then connect housing, PESEL, healthcare and tax actions.

1. Decide whether this is a visit or a move
Visa-free travel in the Schengen Area is generally limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. That allowance is designed for short stays and should not be treated as permission to settle or work in Poland.
If your purpose is employment, study, business or family life, identify the appropriate long-stay visa or residence route before relying on a flight date.

2. Keep residence and work permission separate
A visa or residence document and authority to work answer different legal questions. Many non-EU workers need employer-led work authorisation or a qualifying exemption as well as a lawful basis of stay.
Confirm the employer, role and conditions covered before work begins. A job change can require another check even where the residence card has not expired.

3. Use the current MOS residence process
From 27 April 2026, applications for temporary residence, permanent residence and EU long-term resident status are submitted electronically through MOS. Choose the purpose that matches the real basis of your stay and track formal requests and deadlines in the official system.
Submitting a residence application does not automatically solve every travel or employment issue. Check return travel separately before leaving Poland while an application is pending.
4. Prepare the practical settlement layer
Housing, address registration, PESEL, health insurance, banking and tax are connected but not interchangeable. PESEL is an identification number—not a visa, residence permit or work permit.
Before signing a tenancy, confirm the full cost, notice terms, provider identity and what evidence will be available for local administration. Confirm when employment-linked ZUS and health-insurance registration takes effect.

5. Build a document and deadline plan before departure
Use the checklist issued for your exact consular or residence route. Requirements can vary by purpose and circumstances, and US-issued documents may need an apostille or translation when a Polish authority asks for it.

Frequently asked questions
Can a US citizen move to Poland without a visa?
A US citizen may generally use visa-free travel for a short Schengen stay, subject to the 90-in-180-day limit and entry conditions. A long-term move requires an appropriate legal basis; visa-free entry alone is not a settlement or work route.
Can an American work in Poland during a visa-free stay?
